Contents Page Analysis

Hey Everyone,

In my lesson today at school we started to analyse some contents pages to give us an idea of what type of contents page we want to create either the “blocky” look or an image dominated look. We also looked at the codes and conventions that a contents page would normally contain. Here’s a picture to the right that I took in my lesson which compares the types of contents page. Although the types of magazines I have been looking at use the "blocky" look on their contents page anyway I much prefer that style of contents page anyway. I think it’s much clearer to read and it also means you can fit more information on the contents page without it being too difficult to read.

My analysis of the "blocky" style contents page is that I really like the neat and square look; it almost looks like everything is sectioned of so you can differentiate between each story. I also really like how they have made the numbers of the page next to the images quite big and bold so they can’t be missed. I also like how they have made the back ground white to keep it minimalist and so that all the images and text stand out on it and makes it easy to read. I think a good thing that they have done is have a subscription advert in the bottom right hand corner with a deal in it, so that people don’t miss the information and it’s easy to find. They have also put the sub title for each story in either a different font to the rest of the text or in bold so that it’s easy to read and stands out from the rest of the text. I think that when I come to designing my own contents page I will keep all of this in mind apart from the subscription box, I’d prefer to have an email address and telephone number at the bottom than a whole box dedicated to subscribing to the magazine. I will also keep in mind all of the codes and conventions that I learnt in my lesson so that my contents page is a typical contents for a music magazine.
